Four Oaks Residence

Los Gatos, California

Located on a steeply sloping site, this house is specifically designed to avoid losing any of beautiful oak trees that the property is named for.  A board formed concrete retaining wall runs the length of the uphill side of the house and acts not only to hold up the hill above but acts as an armature, visually linking all the spaces of the house.  There is a strong connection of the indoors and the outdoors with most spaces opening up to the terrace or private decks.  A glazed gallery with a sod roof blends into the hill separating a guest suite.  The house is articulated into stepping volumes and separated by glass and wood screens to keep the house from overwhelming its site.
